Is composite decking slippery when wet?

Composite decking is designed to provide slip resistance, but performance when wet varies according to the product range and its inherent properties due to material composition, surface texture and surface treatment.
Slip resistance is particularly important around pools, on exposed walkways which are exposed to the elements such as rain and even dew, as well as for homes with children and/or pets. It is also an important consideration for high-traffic commercial applications such as restaurants, retail centres and lodges.
What makes composite decking slip resistant?
The slip resistance of composite decking can vary and is based on the type of surface cap or finish. Eva-Last’s mono-extruded Eva-tech board is uncapped and therefore provides a more textured surface which is naturally more slip resistant. Other co-extruded boards are manufactured with an embossing to provide a surface which has more grip underfoot. Apex PLUS has an acrylic capping which has an excellent slip resistance rating even when wet. Timber is often sanded and sealed or varnished which results in a smooth treated finish that can be more slippery when wet.
However, no outdoor surface should be considered completely slip-proof. Dirt, leaves, algae and other organic matter can make a wet deck more slippery if allowed to build up, particularly in shaded or poorly ventilated areas.
Eva-Last offers different composite decking options with high performance, slip-resistance.
Product Slip Resistance
Apex PLUS Premium acrylic cap with excellent slip rating.
Infinity Average slip resistance due to durable co-extruded cap.
Eva-tech Good slip resistance due to textured uncapped finish.
To help maintain slip resistance keep composite decking clean and free from dirt, leaves, and other organic build-up, particularly in wet or shaded areas. Good drainage is also important, so the deck should be correctly installed to allow water to drain away. Always follow the manufacturer’s installation and cleaning guidelines to help maintain the deck’s slip-resistant performance.
