What is composite decking?
Composite decking describes a deck board composed of a mix of different materials. These materials are usually made from wood fibres, or in unique cases, bamboo fibres, combined with recycled plastics for a more durable, moisture resistant, low maintenance product. Composite decking is therefore a more sustainable and longer lasting alternative to traditional timber decking.
Not all composite decking is made equal. The profile of the composite board can have a significant effect on the long-term performance. Avoiding Hollow Core boards, where the middle of the board is hollowed out, either in circles or squares, is highly recommended. These hollows trap moisture and then in heat, expand and cause the boards to crack and break.
Likewise, the type of materials used can make a difference. WPC or Wood Plastic Composite is more prone to moisture absorption than BPC or Bamboo Polymer Composite. Bamboo-PVC is the top of the range, as this is a solid profile, and also retains less heat under foot.
Since composite decking is man-made, it can come in a range of different colours and finishes, so if you wanted an “aged” look, you can get the look without having to wait for timber to age over time.
Composite decking is also produced with a groove in the side of the boards which means you can install the product using hidden fasteners, giving it a clean finished look when installed, unlike timber which has to be top fixed with visible fasteners all over the surface of the deck.
